For the next few weeks, the 3 rd  grade team will be focusing on improving students’ reading fluency through poetry. When children are able to read quickly and accurately with expression, they are reading with fluency. Research shows that when students read texts multiple times, their fluency increases. This in turn improves comprehension, or an understanding of what has been read. Because fluency leads to comprehension, fluent readers enjoy reading more than students who devote all their energy to sounding out words.  Beginning Monday, May 8, your child will receive one poem each night. As a part of students’ daily Homefun, an adult will need listen to them read the poem three times. This strategy is called  Repeated Reading . We encourage you to read the poem with them! A Letter to the Clever Kids

Dear Clever Kids, For the next two weeks you will take the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP/TN Ready) exams for Math, Reading, and Science. I know how hard you have been working, but there is something important that I want you to know… The TCAP/TN Ready tests do not assess all of what makes each of you unique, special, and SMART. The people who create these tests do not know each of you the way that I do, and certainly not the way your families do.  They do not know that some of you sing or draw. They have not seen your natural acting ability. They do not know your friends count on you to be there for them (and you are), that your laughter and jokes can brighten people’s day, and that you set examples for the younger children. They do not know you participate in sports, wonder about your future, or sometimes help your siblings after school. Testing Schedule

Parents, Below you will find a tentative copy of the 3 rd  grade testing schedule for 2017.  This is the most current schedule, but please be aware that it is subject to change. To ensure optimal student performance on these assessments, please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and nutritious breakfast. I will send out additional information regarding TCAP/TN Ready as our testing dates get closer. Scholastic Book Fair

This week is our SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR! Our class will visit the Book Fair on Thursday, February 23rd from 10:40am-11:50am. We are also participating the All for Books collection. Bring in spare change to help our class earn Scholastic Dollars to grow our classroom library!
